the universal design plan: global warming

A  S T A T E M E N T  O F  P U R P O S E

The Audience.
The audience for the social issue of global warming is anyone and everyone. Global warming affects every human being on earth because some say we are the cause of it and we are the solution. Depending on whether or not the specfic audience believes that global warming is a hoax, will vary the the different attitudes of the people. The audience would expect that I would be passionate about my topic, state the different positions and describe new ways that all of us can contribute to the issue of global warming.

The Purpose.
The best possible outcome that could come of the communication that I am composing, is that the audience would agree with my position and then seek out what they can do to help prevent global warming from spiraling any further.

The Context.
The audience will be receiving my communication in a college setting this year. The sooner the audience reads my communation, the sooner something will be done about it. The various affects of global warming have hit all over the world in different communities, institutions, states and countries. The heated topics of the ice glaciers melting, the animal extinction, and the different ways to “go green” make people want to seek ways to cure the global warming disease.

When I compose my paper about the issue of global warming, I hope that the audience respects my points on both sides of the communication. I want them to convey the emotion and passion I have for this topic and hopefully the majority will feel the urge to make a difference in their own community.

A  D E S I G N  P L A N

The Medium.
The way my communication will be dlievered is through a written research report. I believe that this is the type of medium that the audience will be expecting because it will be well thought out, organized and informative.

The Arrangement.
I plan of starting off my paper with the background and definition of what global warming really is. I want to then continue on by stating the different views that people have on global warming and what research backs up each of those views. Following that, I plan on describing the drastic effects global warming has had on the earth. I want to then close the paper by stating that everyone can play a part in the cure for global warming. If all goes as planned, the readers will feel that they have the power to help make a difference.

The Evidence.
I definietely think that photographs would be a great form of evidence to support my paper. If my audience can actually see the drastic effects global warming is having on the earth, I think that would change a lot of people’s minds about it. Rather than just constantly hearing about how global warming is making our world come to an end, seeing might have a different effect on people. A couple of charts might be useful to get my point across as well. A chart of how long global warming has been effecting us and possibly a chart on how much effort is being done to diminish it all together.

Tone of voice.
My tone of voice for my paper, I believe that my tone should be serious yet concerned at the same time. I want to show that I am knowledgeable about my social issue but also worried about the effects that it is having the world today.

The grammar, spelling, and mechanics.
Any audience would expect correct grammar and punctuation in a formal research paper about a social issue. If I want my audience to take my research seriously, I need to make sure that I present my information is a very formal and organized manner.

Two organizations that do work related to the issue you have raised—but that take differing positions relative to the issue.

  • Carbon Fund: Reduce your carbon footprint, offset what you can’t reduce, go carbon neutral for events, offices, shipping or travel. http://www.carbonfund.org/
  • CO2 Science: Global warming is a hoax and they are tired of all the global warming propoganda. Hear what scientists really have to say about global warming. http://www.co2science.org/

Find two Web sites by individual people where as least some of the Web site focuses on your issue—and where the positions offered differ.

  • The Global Warming Pages: Talks about how global warming has been effecting world since the 1800s. http://globalwarmingpages.com/About-global-warming.html
  • Top 10 Global warming Myths: Talk about how all of the global warming rumors are false and why. http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=19468

Find two online articles related to your issue — but make sure the two articles take different positions on the issue.

  • Daily Herald: Talks about how the climate is changing and how easy it will be for people to change their minds that global warming is all a hoax. http://www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=401750
  • Singapore Journal of Tropical Geography: “The global warming clock is ticking so see these places while you can’: Voyeuristic tourism and model environmental citizens on Tuvalu’s disappearing islands”. http://newfirstsearch.oclc.org/WebZ/FSFETCH?fetchtype=fullrecord:sessionid=fsapp3-51521-gdmg8yf9-4ovh8o:entitypagenum=3:0:recno=10:resultset=1:format=FI:next=html/record.html:bad=error/badfetch.html:entitytoprecno=10:entitycurrecno=10:numrecs=1

Using the library’s search capabilities, locate an article published in a popular magazine and an article in a refereed scholarly journal that also pertains to your issue.

  • Congress Daily: Talks about how we need to continue doing research on global warming. http://find.galegroup.com/gtx/retrieve.do?contentSet=IAC-Documents&resultListType=RESULT_LIST&qrySerId=Locale%28en%2C%2C%29%3AFQE%3D%28su%2CNone%2C16%29%22Global+Warming%22%24&sgHitCountType=None&inPS=true&sort=DateDescend&searchType=SubjectGuideForm&tabID=T003&prodId=EAIM&searchId=R1&currentPosition=1&userGroupName=uiuc_eiu&docId=A234083284&docType=IAC
  • Pollution Engineering: Talks about global warming resistance. http://find.galegroup.com/gtx/retrieve.do?contentSet=IAC-Documents&resultListType=RESULT_LIST&qrySerId=Locale%28en%2C%2C%29%3AFQE%3D%28su%2CNone%2C16%29%22Global+Warming%22%24&sgHitCountType=None&inPS=true&sort=DateDescend&searchType=SubjectGuideForm&tabID=T003&prodId=EAIM&searchId=R1&currentPosition=43&userGroupName=uiuc_eiu&docId=A227597631&docType=IAC

Using the library’s search capabilities, locate two books that take differing positions (as far as you can tell from a database) relative to your social issue.

  • An Inconvenient Truth by Al Gore: “Vice President Al Gore brings together leading-edge research from top scientists around the world; photographs, charts, and other illustrations; and personal anecdotes and observations to document the fast pace and wide scope of global warming.” This is a legitament source because Al Gore was a Vice President at one point and he shows how passionate he is about this subject and how we all can make a difference.
  • Lies, damned lies, and science by Sherry Seethaler: “how to sort through the noise around global warming, the latest health claims, and other scientific controversies”.

I found all of the websites, books and articles above by the Eastern Library website or the Daily Herald for one my source.

I think all of the sources above are pretty much legitament sources because most of them are “.org” and are through the Eastern website. I also think both books will be a great source to use for my research paper because Al Gore is a really reliable source and states great points about global warming and how we can fix it. I also think it will be interesting to read about how science thinks that global warming is such a hoax.

global warming is an immediate crisis: critical thinking questions

1.) What words does Gore use to describe global warming? How does his description of the potential impact of global warming compare to Easterbrook’s in the previous essay? Explain.

Al Gore uses the word externality to describe global warming. He says this label means “we don’t want to keep track of this stuff so let’s just pretend it doesn’t exist.” If the world doesn’t recognize that global warming is booming issue, then nothing is going to be resolved thus the issue of global warming will continue. He also uses the word tetra incognita to describe global warming. He goes on and describes if we acknowledge what we do is above the boundaries of our current capacities, that is really just a different way of saying we need to expand our options of fixing this issue beyond what is physically possible.

2.) In what ways does this speech appeal to the emotions? To the intellect in what ways does Gore leverage his political background in this speech? Explain.

Gore applies emotion to his speech in various ways. He goes into deep discussion about the devastating effects of global warming such as the polar ice caps melting and how pollution has been ignored since the old rules of America’s marketplace. By stating these problems, Gore appeals to the audience because they realize the severity of these issues, and how they the ones making the problems greater.

3.) Who is Gore’s audience in this speech? What presumptions does he make about his audience?

Gore directs his speech to every single American citizen. Global warming doesn’t effect a specific group or person, it effects every state and every country. As he goes on and describes to his audience about all of the global warming complications, he presumes that shortly after they will figure out what they need to do on their part to help improve global warming.

4.) How compelling is Gore’s argument? Does the fact that he is a former vice president of the United States influence your reception of his speech? Does his reputation and background make him more or less credible? Explain.

Gore’s argument is very compelling because he touches on subjects that are very sensitive and have an emotional impact on everyone. Gore’s reputation definitely of being a vice president definietely helps the cause a lot because he has proven to the public that is a trustworthy man and stands up for good cause, or causes he believes in. His arguments shows that he is admirable for all that he has done for global warming and shows people how they can follow in his footsteps.

5.) Were there any points raised by Gore that came as a surprise to you? Or did he repeat information that is generally known? Explain.

There were points that Gore raised that were a surprise to me and information that everyone knows about. Something I knew about was when he went into the discussion of how we can solve the climate crisis and get rid of the big vehicles and turn them into hybrids. Hybrids are showing up in all of the car dealers all over the place. They are a great way of going green and keeping the globe less polluted. Another point I knew about was the fact that trees and switchgrass are renewable energy. As Gore puts it, “Renewable sources make up one of the most promising building blocks for reducing carbon pollution.” A point that surprised me was that some people believe that in order to reduce global warming, we should import nuclear power plants as a substitute for coal-fired generators. Agreeing with Gore, I honestly don’t understand how that would help anything. It may end up using the same amount of energy as the coal-fired generators. I also didn’t know that businesses are taking the “Zero Carbon Approach”. This is where they are reducing their carbon dioxide as mucha s possible. Communities are going “Zero Carbon” and apparently, it’s the new black.

6.) Gore asserts that in recent years, the United States has “squandered [its] moral authority.” What does he mean? Is global warming a moral issue? And what role, if any, should the United States play in addressing it? Explain.

Gore says that we, the United States, “squandered our moral authority” because we didn’t take care of the country as a whole. We let it get out of hand with all of the carbon dioxide and pollution. Basically, he’s saying that we took the planet for granted and can’t decipher the different between left and right. Gore says that it is a moral issue because it affects the survival of human civilization. To put it simply, we ruined it for us and for the generations to follow.

I chose to write on the case of global warming. This is a big point in the world as of right now. Global warming is on the news all the time. On the news they rant how the mess of global warming will change the world in the next few years. The world tries new steps all of the time to shape up the theme of global warming all over the world.

The theme of global warming hypes me up and makes me think how I can make a change on my part. When I hear things that say “Go Green”, it makes me want find ways to get rid of global warming. There are new ways that are made known to the world all of the time. “Think green”, “go green”, signs are all over the place. More and more men on earth have found new ways to make sure our world lasts longer than 2012.

I can’t wait to see what comes next for the point of global warming. I will try and do my best to give it my all to do my part and make the world a clean place. I hope the rest of the world does the same.

a little bit about me

My name is Rebecca Elizabeth Lynn. I was born in Melrose Park but raised in Algonquin and Arlington Heights, Illinois. I have one sister named Emma who is three years younger than me. My parents got divorced when I was 10 and they both got remarried a few years after the divorce. I have four cats, two at my mom’s and two at my dad’s.  Their names are Molly, Murphy, Duncan and Clark. Ever since I was a little girl I wanted to become an elementary school teacher. It all started with playing school in my basement with all my neighbors and friends. Religion has never really been a huge part in my life. I’m half Jewish and half Catholic which means I celebrate both Christmas and Hanukkah. Politics confuse me. I can’t stand watching speeches and debates on television. I love going to the movies and having movie nights with my friends. I love to laugh so comedy is my favorite movie genre. Adam Sandler is my favorite actor, he’s hilarious and I love every single movie he has been in. As far as music goes, I listen to all kinds of music. I’m open to anything except opera and country. During my free time, I love to hang out with friends, go to the beach, go to the movies, go to concerts, take pictures, listen to music, or go shopping. In high school I played basketball for two years and was involved in tutoring little kids for four years. I also had an internship at an elementary school in a fourth grade class my senior year and I absolutely loved it. Shopping is my favorite and if I could live at the mall, I would. I got my first job at Justice when I was 16. Justice is a store for girls ages 7-14.  At first it was a lot of fun, but then it just turned into an excuse to go to the mall. When I grow up I want to live in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, possibly Evanston. I’d love to live in a fun town and near a beach. I want to get married and have 3 kids: two boys and one girl. I live in the moment and I am excited for what the future has to bring.

maybe it’s because some people have their own pace of growing up…
or some don’t grow up at all.

CHRISTMAS? say whaat?

i don’t think christmas has ever came this fast before. and i honestly don’t think that i’ve nearly been this busy near christmas either.
basketball, has been keeping me extremely busy everyday with practices, games, or watching the other levels games. our record is 4-1 so far, which is pretty freakin’ sweeeet! no injuries so far! *cross your fingers!*
school, of course. i have my first final this wednesday, for drivers ed, so i’ve been studying really hard for that to get the waver. the rest of my finals are after break… which is absolutely ridiculous because the teachers are giving us two full weeks to erase everything from our brains that we’ve learned from the first 5 months of school.
driving, waHOO! i’m trying to get as many hours as i can before my birthday. it hasn’t been hard at all, in fact, i’m right on track with it and have gotten a lot of expierence and support from my family.
friends, i know i did an entry about this a loong time ago, but i’m still learning who my real friends are, and that some of the friends that i thought were my friends, aren’t. yeah i know, it’s high school. and it’s a learning expierence. blah blah blah.. but i really know what a best friend is and i’m so thankful for them :) and all my other friends, of course.
next year’s classes?, i already picked my classes for next year with my counsler. ooohhhh my god, i can’t BELIEVE IT. it’s going so fast! beside the fact that my counslers living on another planet, i’m pretty psyched for my course choices for next year.
holidays: malls, lines, money, giftcards, stockings, angry employees, impatient customers, a week until christmas, no parking spots, icy roads, last minute shopping …..
…. and it’s the most wonderful time of the year!
